SEM does indeed stand for Search Engine Marketing. I believe that SEM is more about paid traffic for business purposes, so anything under PPC (pay per click) campaigns fall under SEM.
Advertisement per click , Videos , Logos at some one web site is techniques of SE
SEO is a techniques to promote your website to increase it's PR. |

SEO is a techeniques from which u can increase the page rank of website.
And sem is nothing but the advertisng like Pay per click Policy

No SEM campaign is complete without SEO. Moreover, since the purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and users, you may find that it will suffice on its own. In any case, the advantages of SEO over the other aspects of SEM make it clear that, even if you are going to spend additional money on advertising and paid placement, SEO must be your first step in promoting your site.

I totally agree with dburdon SEO is the subset of SEM In Search Engine Marketing covers PPC, Affilate Marketing, Email marketing and Local Marketing. |

Actually SEO is only the process of optimizing on site and off site for getting better rankings in search engines while SEM is a broader view of SEO in SEM we also focus on how to make sells or promote some thing from SE visitors.

SEO is the act of optimising the HTML and other content of your website for relevant, targeted key phrases in order to attain higher natural listings than competing websites. SEO provides a cheaper long term solution for increased qualified traffic and generates customer inquiries that ultimately convert to sales.
Now SEM is broader than SEO. It includes SEO and other areas to improve a sites visibility in search engine results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions.
You can think of SEM as more expensive and quite possibly more targeted, while SEO is free (not counting your time of course) and its purpose is to obtain better free search listings. |
