Still exchange links ... or not?  Reply with quote

Google has made a rather significant change in SERP lately, and ...

many are debating about this. One of topics that they are discussing is whether we should exchange links or not. What's your take on that? Should we still exchange links or not?

I absolutely still believe exchanging links is an effective tool for sem - just because Google has 1 update that knocks out some people, all of a sudden speculation is that you shouldn't do this or that - and Google wants it that way.

The Internet doesn't exist without links - to say that linking to other sites will penalize you is absolutely unfounded. Obviously, if you are a church website, you don't want to be linking to a porn site, but otherwise, links are highly important.

It's fun to watch the headless chickens run around everytime Google has a friggin update...

Google results wobbly  Reply with quote

SEO4G, OHC,

I've seen the changes hit my sites today - 18th. It looks like it could be down to an over reliance on automated looking links. Do you agree?

I would say that is a part of the problem - has the number of results changed for your keyphrase as well?

I would not rely on automated links, though I would not remove them all of the sudden if I were you. As SEOforGoogle suggests, we should probably sit tight and wait for a while. Also as SEOforGoogle suggests, we should probably keep acquiring links ...

or they are getting ready for something ive been monitoring and they must be getting ready for christmas and the upcoming pr update

As long as the backlinking is done properly, noone should be penalising you for it.

Outbound links - Google update  Reply with quote

Obviously IBLs remain key. But its being suggested elsewhere that outbound links have been built into the Jagger update. Any thoughts?

Jagger 1  Reply with quote

Apparently the real Google watchers are calling it Jagger 1. It was named Jagger by Brett Tebke of Webmasterworld. The emerging consensus (for what's that worth) is that Jagger 2 and maybe Jagger 3 will soon be on their way.

Have heard this a couple of times before, but I can't really see how outbound links make any difference to how relevant your page is for a particular search term.

A good page about 'Cheese' would have 'Cheese' in the title, <h1>, a fair few times in the text, and obviously a good few IBL with 'Cheese' in the anchor text. But why would outbound links make it any more relevant to the term 'Cheese'?

Outbound links - some thoughts  Reply with quote

The overwhelming view is that Google is off page driven. However, for Google's approach to work there's a requirment for outbound as well as inbound links. I don't believe that anyone is saying that OBLs have anything like to standing of IBLs. Just that there is soem small impact if your OBLs are directed to relevant sites.

Building link popularity is key to getting good search engine rankings, and link exchanges are a good way to build link popularity.
