One SEO's mission: To get OUT of DMOZ  Reply with quote

Yes, you read that right.

Doesn't happen very much, but in this case it did, and apparently it made some sense. Brian Turner's DMOZ listing for his SEO website has the side-effect of changing the description displayed for his website in the Google SERPs. Brian felt that the DMOZ-induced description hurt his business.

quote:

Includes service details, webmaster articles, and contact details

Yeah, that isn't the greatest description. Website includes "contact details". WTH? I'm glad the site does include contact details, but nobody needs that in the description.

Anyway, since getting a description in DMOZ changed to one's own liking is like asking to have a superhighway named after you, Brian figured he would just have the DMOZ listing removed. It just wasn't worth it to him.

But DMOZ wasn't going for it. Anyway after a big blowup on the Resource Zone forum (unofficial DMOZ support forum), Mr. Turner managed to get what he wanted after all. Aparently the business had moved, and was no longer listing in the right geo category. So, this was enough to get DMOZ to move it and update his description to reflect that his business is SEO related.

The drama...

I had to change my details in DMOZ suspecting the same thing but I'm not sure how relevant it would to the SERPs.

I've had a few clients with this problem. The solution?

Make sure you have the description you want in your meta description tag.

Changes were picked up in 3 days.

Hope this helps.

In Lincolnshire we have an expression for the Wonderful, Kind, Helpful guys in the DMOZ forum, but I'm not allowed to say it because I don't want to be banned. No

If you don't get what you want, you'd better hope you want what you get!

I'm having a similar problem with the yahoo directory and my title. My company name is Fast PC Networks, they have the title as PC Networks. I've requested 4 times to have it changed to no avail. I'm very disapointed after spending $299.

would the persons DMOZ description not be his own problem for not thinking about the gravity of the submission. if this engine is the basis for the big engines surely you much do a DMOZ submission with a degree of care

The DMOZ directory has only human editors, and they are entitled to edit a description if they choose. This was the problem.
