The Link Experiment is an interesting new "directory" that dispenses with the traditional category heirarchy. Instead, this site places the top 100 links on the homepage ranked by the highest bid price paid by the submitter.
Now obviously paying more doesn't help that much directly on the SEO, but bidding more can help keep your link from falling off the homepage. But not to worry, all links ever submitted are listed on the Past Links page. The current PageRank of 4 probably isn't the main draw for submitters at this time, rather the potential for direct traffic. If this new link page does even half as well as the original Million Dollar Home Page pixel site, it could send some decent traffic and stronger PR in the future.
The Link Experiment was founded May 15th, 2006 by Brandon Rowe to support his running career and his goal of running in the Olympics. (Of course, he'd like to make a million dollars too. ) In addition to direct instant-placement link sales, the site offers a blog with information on the site and contests, as well as shirts for sale with the site slogan "got links?".

It is certainly aiming to break the traditional directory boundaries. However, I found it a little to simplistic personally. There are a bunch of links on the site without any explanation of what the links are about.
Also, not having sections makes it a little hard to find what the end user is looking for.
I wish every success for this directory though.

Andrew,
a nice idea. I spotted the SEO1.net link. Are bid values genuine? Secondly is their a risk that a link could eb surrounded by "bad neighbourhood" links.

The bid values appear to be genuine. I bought a couple, and the values are exactly what I paid. Also the site blog mentions something about a recent purchase of 20 $6 links, you can see all the $6 bid "blog" links on the homepage.
Regarding the bad neighborhoods, according to Google...
quote:
In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
...it's links out from your own site that can negatively affect you. If you take that at face value, the worst that could happen from the Link Experiment is that you might not get any value from the link for SEO, if it became a bad neighborhood site. But, at least in my case, I'm hoping to get a few click-thrus from it, so even that isn't a concern to me.
It's probably not correct to call this a directory, because there is no categorization and not even an overall theme. Although topically-themed versions of this type of link page, might add to it's SEO usefulness. |

I will certainly keep everyone informed on the traffic - I see this to get *potentially* the same type of exposure as the million dollar pixel ad site.
It's somewhat gimmicky (no offense to the site owner), but it's also unique as well.
I just wonder if I can up the ante if I get outbid?

I see the site picked up 'altitude' with the top bids, I wish the best of luck for the future could anyone tell us what's the amount of click-throughs they receive? It would be interesting and would make the difference between buying and not buying..
