Google to Launch Chrome Operating System in 2010  Reply with quote

Google has announced that it is to launch the Chrome operating system in 2010. It will be open source and use the platform associated with the Chrome browser.

The whole build philosophy will be one of lightweight high speed code focusing on the online rather than offline way people now use computers. The launch of an operating system will bring Google into ever greater competition with Microsoft.

Sounds a bit loose to me. I mean what if you're ISP has some problems, and you lose your connection.

Nice to have something web based I agree, but it shouldn't be totally web based.

If I designed it I'd make it bi-web based, so you can switch between the two, making it faster when you need it to be.

This is the best thing since sliced bread. A computer which you flick a switch and its on and ready to use. This will be a huge success in schools I can see. e.g. less support required to maintain the machines.

I know a bunch of home users which don't use their computer for anything other than browsing the web. All the other stuff on the PC just confuses them. Thumbs up for google, I can't wait to test it.

Almost everything is webbased nowdays. I see once it's been out for a little, more and more websites will put their focus on online storage solutions.

This is exellent news, thanks for sharing dburdon!!

Update: I was that excited I found some videos showing the new Chrome os for those that are interested: http://chrome.blogspot.com/

Matt Cutts was Live blogging on this. Was a bit strange to read and obviously biased but was interesting to see how things "flowed" at the conference. Personally I probably won't be getting this... Not really for me.

I Installed Windows 7 a few months back and to be honest I am more than happy with it. The issue I have with switching to something like Chrome OS is the hassle of compatibility. Will be able to play all games, will all hardware be supported, will it be linux/ubuntu. I liked ubuntu, I stopped using it because of hassles with program compatibility. Also it's all good and well to install it on parent's pc's, but mine have only just gotten used to windows and it's only been 7 years.. !
My point is the uptake will be from high end users, i.e us lot most probably. They will probably release a few laptops with it on, but mainstream .. I can't see it working JUST yet... I might be wrong, and happy to be proven so.

This is just my opinion, but I don't sell myself as being massively knowledgeable on these matters

This would be very exciting to see what they come up with. They have talked about this web based OS for long time now. I am excited about this.
